Zero Waste School: A 12-month online program

Exciting News! Zero Waste School was just born: A 12-month online video program where students discover brand new eco-topics with every passing season. This continuing education program is designed for folks who are looking to have the resources and skills at their fingertips to jumpstart or revitalize their journey to eco-friendly living.

How the Zero Waste School began

Growing up, I was craving information about how to care for the environment. My primary school teachers insisted recycling was the answer, but I had an inkling there was more I could do. So, as an adult, I began managing programs to reforest clear-cut tropical landscapes and participating in international campaigns to stop big oil from destroying biodiverse habitats. This was all important and fulfilling work. However, at the end of the day, I was still eager to make meaningful changes in my personal life, too.

After all, I didn’t know how to sprout a seed, how to compost, or how to make my own herbal remedies when I caught a cold. There were so many topics I was curious about, like how to clean my home with safe homemade products… how to efficiently reduce waste in my home… or how to be an effective activist. So, I carved out time for self-development, and to delve into permaculture!

A few years later, while teaching a sustainable living course, I met Cristina. She’s a Peruvian woman absolutely fond of crafting and who was eager to learn about environmental protection. The permaculturist and the crafter made the perfect team: we called ourselves the Permacrafters. Together, we learned how to craft our own eco-friendly & safe body care products… switched to having zero waste periods… and began prioritizing secondhand belongings!

We gathered all the most valuable information about transitioning to a lifestyle that’s respectful of the environment, and compiled it into a hands-on year-long program.

What does the Zero Waste School include?

The school is a video course program with accompanying workbooks, quizzes, community forums, and bi-monthly Q&As that introduces new topics each season. While students have lifetime access to the course materials, they are encouraged to follow along with the other students by season:

1.Intro to Zero Waste Living

Students begin their journey learning about what the zero waste movemement is all about and the 5Rs (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot). We also touch upon how privilege plays a role in achieving zero waste goals, and how we value progress over perfection.

2. Zero Waste Body Care & Cosmetics

In the summer, we delve into the environmental problems and health risks associated to conventional body care products and explore how to make safe DIY products instead with low-waste ingredients. This course touches upon zero waste face care, body care, hair care, dental care, makeup and nail polish, and basic herbal treatments for skin problems.

3. Zero Waste Period

In the Autumn, we get into Earth-friendly menstruation options, from cloth pads to period underwear, free flow instinct, and more. The course also explores herbal remedies and practices for managing menstrual cramps.

4. Herbal Remedies for Common Ailments

The second class on the syllabus in the Autumn is about herbal medicine. We cover the basics of making your own herbal preparations, including alcoholic and vinegar tinctures, infusions and decoctions, medicinal syrups, lozenges, compresses, poultices, and salves.  Students learn to make remedies for common ailments, from colds, to pain, to anxiety, and more.

5. Growing Sprouts & Microgreens

In the Winter, students delve into growing sprouts & microgreens indoors. These plants are nutrient-dense, protein-rich, living foods that can be grown year-round in your home. This course is especially appreciated by gardening newbies.

6. Secondhand Living

The second winter course delves into the environmental and financial benefits of buying or acquiring secondhand goods as opposed to new. It explores the best places and ways to easily obtain secondhand belongings. We even delve into furnishing homes secondhand, raising babies with secondhand goods, and keeping a secondhand wardrobe.

6. Environmental Activism

Students finish up the winter season with a course on eco-activism. The climate crisis requires unprecedented international changes to take place within the next 11 years to limit the environmental catastrophe. We ask the question: How can we, as activists, influence governments and businesses to make the ambitious changes needed? This course explores different ways to be an effective activist.

7. Green Cleaning minus the Greenwashing B.S.

The Spring season calls for Spring cleaning! Students learn how to consciously clean their homes with safe, zero waste recipes for their laundry room, bathroom, kitchen, and living areas. They learn new skills, tips, and tricks to effectively sanitize their home while avoiding toxic cleaners and protecting their health.
