Zero Waste Wisdom with Jenica

Zero Waste WisdomMy name is Jenica Barrett and I’m the person behind Zero Waste Wisdom! I currently run a website designed to promote the zero waste lifestyle. Using recipes, purchasing guides, and local resources, I  try to empower those looking to make the switch to less trash. I am a regular twenty-something woman living in an apartment with no specialized background in environmental studies or science. I am just extremely passionate about helping the planet and reducing the waste I produce! I believe in providing diverse options and resources that people can use depending on their personal situation.

I originally started going zero waste over two years ago by analyzing my trash each month. In doing so, I realized I was calling myself an environmentalist but throwing away so much garbage! Since beginning this lifestyle, I am actively doing something to better our planet that is inspiring to me and even fun to do! There have been many unintended side effects to going zero waste too. Through reducing my waste, I have discovered local farmers and community organizations that I didn’t know about before. This change has expanded my understanding of the recycling system, product manufacturing, and ways to support my health naturally. The zero waste lifestyle has so many benefits!

Zero Waste Wisdom

I try to share what I have learned through this lifestyle with others by hosting community workshops and events. I believe that engaging with the local businesses is an important step to building awareness around consumers demand for less packaging. Through my workshops, I work to inspire people to make small switches at home that can have a huge impact on waste reduction and encourage them to speak out about the benefits of reducing plastic consumption and waste production.

If you want to learn more about me and what I do, you can visit my website and sign up to receive updates on recent blog posts. In addition, you can follow me on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest! I look forward to sharing my zero waste wisdom with you!

I think so many of us who are starting down a zero waste path have that moment where our eyes are suddenly opened to the amount of trash (and recycling) that we create. The earlier in our lives that happens, the better. I can’t wait to see what the next generation of zero waster’s will look like, people who may have never used disposable razors or straws.

Wow, what a beautiful picture to imagine! I hope that my children will be this new generation and learn to have consumption habits in tune with the planet!

Such a treat to meet another passionate person, just out there doing their thing! I too started by taking a waste audit; it was so eye opening and I recommend this as a first step for everyone wanting to producing less landfill. AND I totally hear you on the excitement and fun of coming across new products, services and producers in our community; this has been such a positive side effect of my zero waste journey.

Jenica, if you were to pick one small switch people can make that has the biggest impact, what would you say that is?

Oh boy, that question always stumps me! I think that changing one thing always grows into more and more until you realize your lifestyle is completely changed and the changes aren’t hard anymore! If I have to pick one though, I would suggest bringing your own cloth bags to grocery stores and using those to buy items in bulk. There is so much waste in our kitchen that we can reduce! Thanks for reading 🙂

I look forward to reading more of your posts. It’s great that your spreading your knowledge. I think this movement is going to change the way will shop and view trash. Being involved with the community and spreading the knowledge is a very important step in the zero waste lifestyle, because a lot of people seem to be misinformed about the statistics of trash production and the long term dangers it imposes on the environment.

Thanks for reading! I think community involvement is super important and that’s why I am working so hard to set up more workshops in my local area!
